HIS PROMISE FOR ALL

The Rebbi originally wrote his will in loshon kodesh and specified at the end that it should be clearly translated into both Yiddish and English. This was to ensure that those who do not understand loshon kodesh could still read and comprehend his will. In his will, the Rebbi made a promise to you, which is why it was so important to him that it be understandable to all. To this day, in the Ohel of the Rebbi, three versions of the will are displayed on the wall: the original in loshon kodesh, and translations in Yiddish and English. This allows any Jew, regardless of language proficiency, to understand it.

Translated from Loshon Kodesh into English as requested in his will.

โ€œIt is known that I have always tried to help people to repent of their bad ways, and with thanks to the almighty, I was successful many times. It is my wish, with G-dโ€™s help, to continue in this way even after I leave this world for Gan Eden.

Therefore, whoever is in need of any kind of yeshuah (help) or a refuah (speedy recovery from illness) for himself, or for someone else, should go to my grave (if possible on Friday before noon) and do as follows: on arriving at the grave he should light one candle for the neshomo (soul) which will go to announce that someone has come to pray at my grave, then he should light two candles for my neshomo and say his request and also the names ( his name and his motherโ€™s name).

THEN I SHALL CERTAINLY GO TO MY SAINTLY FOREFATHERS THAT THEY SHOULD AWAKEN G-Dโ€™S MERCY FOR A YESHUAH AND A REFUAH.

But there is a defined condition attached โ€” that the person concerned must promise me to better his way of yiddishkeit in at least one point, for example he whose business operates on shabbos must promise to keep it closed, He who shaves his beard with a razor blade should now shave in a way which is permitted, a woman who did not keep, G-d forbid, the laws of Niddah and Tevilah (pertaining to menstruation and ritual immersion) must promise me that from now on she will observe these laws properly, a woman who did not cover her hair must promise from now on to wear a sheitel (wig), A Ben Torah who does not learn must promise that from now on he will learn every day โ€” particularly Gemoro, and so on โ€”each person shall promise to better his ways in at least one point. Then with the Almightyโ€™s help, I shall try to awaken G-dโ€™s mercy.

But it must clearly be known to all those who come to my grave and make such a promise, that they are bound to keep their word and not to try to deceive me, G-d forbid, for then I shall be very angry, because unfortunately there is already so much deceit in this world โ€” but not in the world to come, which is a world of truth.โ€
